Speech Bubble: Paul Soles

We all remember the original 1967 Spider-Man cartoon (you know the one with the catchy theme song) but did you know that all the dialogue for the series was recorded in Toronto and Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is not only still around, but still acting at 86-years-young as the star of the new CBC Comedy web series, My 90-year-old Roommate? The legend comes by to spill secrets from the production of Spider-Man, including the fact that the voice acting company for all the original Marvel cartoons – Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Marvel Superheroes and more – was originally put together during the production of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation classic Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer where Paul starred as Hermey the Elf. Fast forward into the 2000s and Paul inadvertently found himself a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a live-action bit part in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and a prior relationship with star Edward Norton. Denver Comic Con 2017

Denver Comic Con 2017

Denver Comic Con is put on by the Non-Profit Organization, Pop Culture Classroom (PCC – popcultureclassroom.org).  Dedicated to Education and Literacy through Comic Books.  PCC

This was a crazy year for everyone i spoke with, and knew.  All in a positive way.  All my Artist and Vendor Friends tables/booths were packed all weekend with adoring and paying Fans of their work.  All of my Friends that attended or worked the Convention,  had an amazing time!

Normally in years past, I’ve always been able to walk to the show floor the day prior on ‘Set Up Day’ and get familiar with the floor layout, and where certain Artists or Vendors will be.  Because of new security measures, it was cancelled this year.  These new security measures were felt the entire weekend, but not in an intrusive way.  Not for me, and those i know anyway.  Bag checks went quickly in my case, and I carry recording equipment and accessories for them.  I did see long lines on Saturday, but this is pretty normal for this show on a Saturday afternoon.

My arrival on Friday was a little delayed – Sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out.  Just before i arrived, I got a message from my Friends from Nerds That Geek (NTG) asking if i could help them out with a couple of Interviews.  Being the awesome Friend and Self Promoting Whore that I am, I took the offer.

I wasn’t at the Show for 20min before I met up with the Boss himself, JB in the Media Booth – This would be a First for me – Despite having done Press all 5years of DCC, I’ve never had the opportunity to conduct an interview from within its little cornered off room.  He introduced me to Sue Duff, Author of Stack a Deck – Book 4 of The Weir Chronicles.  Sue was awesome!  I have to be honest, I had never heard of Her or Her work, but after speaking with Her, I really want to check out her work.  She was a lot of fun to chat with.  You should go check out the Interview –

I had about an hour before the next interview was to start.  I adventured off into the massive crowd that had already invaded DCC.  Those with I spoke with early Friday were amazed at the big turnout Friday was becoming.  I located a few Friends, and a couple Artists I didn’t even know where attending, which is always an awesome surprise!

My 2nd interview for NTG was with Liv Hadden and Mo Malone – Writer and Artist for The Adventures of Juicebox and Shame – Both Liv and Mo were a blast to chat with.  Again, I wasn’t familiar with their work, but I’m a Semi-Professional, I know what I’m dong.  Being open to new adventures is what’s got me into doing some really awesome things at Conventions.  Through that, I gain new interests in work I might go on not knowing anything about.

I spent the rest of Friday getting familiar with where people where located and setting up chats or interviews.  Of course there was time to check out Breckenridge Brewery’s newest Convention Exclusive Beer- I Am Brewt! This was delicious! I enjoyed a few of these through the weekend.

Saturday –

Again, plans don’t always go through. In this case, I was unaware RTD had added a new Light Rail Line to the Station I was at – and got on the wrong train.  I realized it quickly, but not before having to deviate from my course a slight bit.  No biggie, but this is what happens when you dong have enough caffeine in your system sometimes.  Once I arrived and got all my equipment setup, it was time to meet up with my POI Co-Host, Che.  Che and I tackled the Convention all weekend together.  After being ushered into line, and bag checked (again, it was quick) we entered the hall and took it all in.  Again, there was an adjustment period for Che, as the layout was different than in years past.  We also had our Friend A.J. from PopCult Pins with us for the weekend.  A.J. attended panels almost exclusively all weekend.

Che and I mingled with Artists, spent time at the Kerbal Space Academy Booth – Where Dasveldez, and his Crew spent the weekend teaching the young and old how to launch, fly, and land – just some of the possible units you can make in Kerbal Space Program – I had the opportunity to speak with DasValdez on Sunday morning.  Their booth was busy all weekend.  I love this game, and their masterful expertise make it look so easy to play.

My Mom came and checked out the Convention as well.  My entire Family really gets into this event, and its really cool seeing her there.  She hates crowds, but she seems just at home at this event.  I’m Officially starting the hashtag, #BringMomsToCon – Lets see if this takes off!

Sunday –

Sunday start much earlier than the first two days did.  I got to the show before the door were opened and was able to get an interview in with DasVeldez as the show was starting.  Che and I were also able to meet up with our Friend Smurf, from 5280Geek and got to #MadePod with him on his Podcast.  Its always nice to Podcast with local people.  I do so much over Skype, its always nice to change that dynamic.

Again, Sunday was incredibly busy.  Planned interviews were cancelled because of how busy eveyone was.  I will not take away from someone that could be making money.  I did get to chat with some of my Favorite people in my Convention Family.  Robin and Cory Childs just released their newest project Wavemen – Which was debuting at Denver Comic Con.  The book is awesome, the artwork in it, combine with the story make it a page turner! The little i skimmed over while speaking to them drew me in.  Nicki Rapp, Voice Actress for Psychonauts and The Walking Dead Video Game was also in attendance.  She couldn’t really speak too much about the Psyconauts sequel, but that she’s excited to be part of it, and can’t wait to show more of it off and speak about it more! Dan Connor was showing off some of his new work and properties he is working on.  Cap For Kids booth was crowded all weekend – Speakng of kids – The Kids Section of the Convention was full of activities for them to soak up.  From making your own Captain America Shield to learning how to draw from Artists, there was plenty to keep the kids active and entertained.

This convention grows each year, and this year was no exception.  Initial numbers so far are in the 115.000 people range.  That’s roughly 100,000 more than the first year the show was a show.  Each year, more and more people become aware that Denver in on the map on Geekdom and we’re here to stay!  I’ve already sent out the call to other POI Members to join me in next year’s adventures as we’ll always support DCC and Pop-Culture Classroom and all who put together and work at this amazingly run Convention.

As far plans for next year?  I really hope to be part of, or put on a Panel at my Home Show.  I’d love to Moderate a Panel one day as well.  I do them at other Shows in town, and out of town – It’d be a proud moment to Moderate at DCC.  We shall see as the next year rolls by what surprises the folks at DCC have in store for us, and what exciting news that will start bubbling up in the next few months.

Nathan Fillion Coming to Denver Comic Con!

DENVER  March 22, 2017   Denver Comic Con (DCC), Denver’s largest consumer convention and a program of education nonprofit Pop Culture Classroom (PCC), today announced Nathan Fillion has been added to the guest line-up for its June 30 , July 2, 2017 event at the Colorado Convention Center.

Fillion is well-known for his collaborations with Joss Whedon, starting with his role as Captain Malcom Reynolds in 2002’s television series Firefly, and the reprisal of the role for the feature film adaption Serenity, a recurring role as Caleb on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and as Captain Hammer on Whedon’s Emmy-winning web series, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Fillion also appeared in Whedon’s screen adaption of Much Ado About Nothing as Dogberry.

Nathan Fillion is easily our most-requested guest, said Denver Comic Con director Christina Angel. I’m personally thrilled to be hosting him and I’m excited to give fans the experience so many have been asking for.

Fillion has embraced his role as a pop-culture icon in Alan Tudyk’s Con Man, a series available on Comic Con HQ about an actor trying to break out of his type-cast while earning a living on the comic con circuit. Fillion plays Jack Moore, an actor who has a much higher standing in the pop culture community than the main character.

Mainstream pop-culture fans will recognize Fillion for his work on ABC’s Castle, a role for which he won four People’s Choice Awards for his portrayal of Richard Castle. The series ran for eight seasons and more than 170 episodes. He’s also had a recurring role on ABC’s Modern Family and Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet.

Among his many roles, Fillion voiced the character Johnny Worthington in Pixar’s Monster University, as well as the Monstrous Inmate in Guardians of the Galaxy, a film franchise that will also feature Fillion in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 as Simon Williams.

Fillion joins other notable Denver Comic Con guests such as Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Bonnie Wright (Harry Potter), Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Felicia Day (Supernatural), Finn Jones (Marvels Iron Fist, Game of Thrones), Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin (Netflix’s Stranger Things), Khary Payton (The Walking Dead), Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride), Weird Al Yankovic and Gotham stars Ben McKenzie, Morena Baccarin and Robin Lord Taylor.

Denver Comic Con is one of the most attended pop culture conventions in America. The popularity is due in part because of its robust schedule of programmingmore than 400 hours of sessions during which artists, creators, celebrities and industry experts talk about their craft and their creationsas well as its family-friendly mission and environment. The largest portion of the show floor, more than 9,000 sq. ft., is dedicated to teens and children with activities designed to engage kids in education through pop culture.

Drunk On Comics Episode 243

Tony’s back! You get to hear all about his trip to Florida! All. About. It.

Linz reviewed Paper Girls #11. This issue was a transitory issue, setting up the girls adventure in another place?…time?…dimension? It is unclear to the reader and the characters of the story actually where and when they are right now, but they are definitely not in Kansas anymore (that’s a movie reference for your ass, this story does not actually take place in Kansas). This series, written by Brian K. Vaughn and drawn by Cliff Chiang, comes highly recommended by Linz. Her review does not do it justice, go out and buy them all! Right now! We’ll wait.

OK, assuming you just got back from the comic book store, you can rejoin our conversation, which covers topics such as the new Legion show, super hero origin stories, the Power Ranger suits for the movie, and Kevin Smith.

Tony talked more about his trip to Florida.

And then Tony talked even more about his trip to Florida.

Drunk on Comics Podcast Episode 240: Who Needs Potato Salad?

Linz, Tony, and Josh gathered this week to talk about all things current and nerdy. Well, mostly. Turns out Josh is about a year late on a theory that widely circulated the internet about year ago. Still made for an interesting discussion though.

After trying to figure out what version of reality they were currently in, things moved to Tony’s most favorite topic: Power Rangers. Seriously, we should probably think about changing the name of this podcast to Drunk on Power Rangers. What started out as a review about issue 11 of the Power Rangers comic from BOOM! Studios quickly turned in to a history lesson about the Power Rangers and then a full on geek out from Tony and Josh, while Linz just sat back and watched the weirdness. Of course, the new Power Rangers movie trailer came out, so that became part of the discussion as well.

This week your hosts remembered they were a comic book podcast and reviewed some books! Along with Power Rangers #11, Tony also reviews WWE #1. Not having watched wrestling when this storyline took place, he is interested in where this story is going and is appreciative of the “backstage look” this comic offers. Both the writing and the art are on point. Later in the podcast, Linz reviews Curse Words #1 written by Charles Soule and drawn by Ryan Browne. The is a fun book full of wizards and magic, but with a great twist that can only be brought to you by the duo working on this book.

Other topics brought up during this episode are the rumors behind the casting of Cable in the next Deadpool movie and the possibility of Hellboy 3. They also covered the newest Logan trailer.

Booze and a Book this week is Monsters Unleashed #1 paired with an Absolut Monster.

Speech Bubble – Shane Heron

Independent comic book artist Shane Heron (Black Hole Hunters Club, Monstrosity) always had a huge talent for drawing, but didn’t actually make his first comic until his mid-twenties. Despite the relatively late start, he made up for it with gusto, collaborating with past Speech Bubble guest Ricky Lima on a 24-hour comic that would eventually become the alien bounty hunters adventure Black Hole Hunters Club (https://www.facebook.com/BlackHoleHuntersClub/). He even created a comic with the host of this very podcast. Now he’s working on a new book of his own called Morris – a post-apocalyptic western featuring a sheriff with more than a passing resemblance to actor Wilford Brimley. Drunk on Comics Podcast 269: We saw Spider-Man: Homecoming Before Y’all

So as the title of this episode says, Josh, Linz and Tony all were invited to see the sneak preview of Spider-Man: Homecoming.   And while they had a lot to say, Josh decided he wanted to be Spider-lame and sit this one out.   While Linz and Tony tried to not give away too much of what they say, the beginning 15 minutes has them discussion a bit about the movie.  So there is your spoiler warning.

Off the Shelf, Tony briefly talked about what Marvel is doing right with Secret Empire #5.    While there is some of the same tropes being used with the dead coming back, the over all story is one of the better “events” they have done in a while.   He also was sad to hear that The Flintstones comic has ended.    He went over some of the themes portrayed in the series, and why it is one of the best comics in recent memory.    Linz also reviewed an ending to a series with Jem and the Holograms #26.   The characters will live on in other series, but the main one ended a few months ago and Linz wanted to share her joy and sadness over it.

The duo also talked about some thoughts from some directors.   The new Hellboy movie is going to be darker and rated R.  The Power Rangers hasn’t had the greatest box office return, and the director of that thinks it is because it was not pg. (Linz and Tony think it would have been way worse if it was)

Booze and a Book was Jem and the Holograms #26 and a Strawberry Short’s Cake from Shorts brewing.

Drunk on Comics Podcast 266: Zordon’s Interruption

Linz, Tony, and Josh spent a large amount of time this week looking up video games this week because of E3.  The Electronic Entertainment Expo is a large convention for the video game industry to show off their new hardware and games that will be coming out in the next couple months, or in some cases next couple years.   Tony loves this time of year because it allows him to talk about more than just comic books in at least one episode a year.

Linz reviewed Regression #1 from Image.   It is a story about a hypnotist.  But not just about a hypnotist, but one that may have ties to a demon.   The book was a tad bit on the gory side for Linz’s taste.   And although she thought she saw where the book was going, the last page left her with questions.

Booze and a Book was Tekken #2 paired with a Street Fighter Hadouken shot.  To make one, pour 1/2 shot of Blue Curacao, 1/2 shot of Blueberry Vodka and a splash of Everclear and light it on fire.
