Denver Comic Con 2017

Denver Comic Con 2017

Denver Comic Con is put on by the Non-Profit Organization, Pop Culture Classroom (PCC – popcultureclassroom.org).  Dedicated to Education and Literacy through Comic Books.  PCC

This was a crazy year for everyone i spoke with, and knew.  All in a positive way.  All my Artist and Vendor Friends tables/booths were packed all weekend with adoring and paying Fans of their work.  All of my Friends that attended or worked the Convention,  had an amazing time!

Normally in years past, I’ve always been able to walk to the show floor the day prior on ‘Set Up Day’ and get familiar with the floor layout, and where certain Artists or Vendors will be.  Because of new security measures, it was cancelled this year.  These new security measures were felt the entire weekend, but not in an intrusive way.  Not for me, and those i know anyway.  Bag checks went quickly in my case, and I carry recording equipment and accessories for them.  I did see long lines on Saturday, but this is pretty normal for this show on a Saturday afternoon.

My arrival on Friday was a little delayed – Sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out.  Just before i arrived, I got a message from my Friends from Nerds That Geek (NTG) asking if i could help them out with a couple of Interviews.  Being the awesome Friend and Self Promoting Whore that I am, I took the offer.

I wasn’t at the Show for 20min before I met up with the Boss himself, JB in the Media Booth – This would be a First for me – Despite having done Press all 5years of DCC, I’ve never had the opportunity to conduct an interview from within its little cornered off room.  He introduced me to Sue Duff, Author of Stack a Deck – Book 4 of The Weir Chronicles.  Sue was awesome!  I have to be honest, I had never heard of Her or Her work, but after speaking with Her, I really want to check out her work.  She was a lot of fun to chat with.  You should go check out the Interview –

I had about an hour before the next interview was to start.  I adventured off into the massive crowd that had already invaded DCC.  Those with I spoke with early Friday were amazed at the big turnout Friday was becoming.  I located a few Friends, and a couple Artists I didn’t even know where attending, which is always an awesome surprise!

My 2nd interview for NTG was with Liv Hadden and Mo Malone – Writer and Artist for The Adventures of Juicebox and Shame – Both Liv and Mo were a blast to chat with.  Again, I wasn’t familiar with their work, but I’m a Semi-Professional, I know what I’m dong.  Being open to new adventures is what’s got me into doing some really awesome things at Conventions.  Through that, I gain new interests in work I might go on not knowing anything about.

I spent the rest of Friday getting familiar with where people where located and setting up chats or interviews.  Of course there was time to check out Breckenridge Brewery’s newest Convention Exclusive Beer- I Am Brewt! This was delicious! I enjoyed a few of these through the weekend.

Saturday –

Again, plans don’t always go through. In this case, I was unaware RTD had added a new Light Rail Line to the Station I was at – and got on the wrong train.  I realized it quickly, but not before having to deviate from my course a slight bit.  No biggie, but this is what happens when you dong have enough caffeine in your system sometimes.  Once I arrived and got all my equipment setup, it was time to meet up with my POI Co-Host, Che.  Che and I tackled the Convention all weekend together.  After being ushered into line, and bag checked (again, it was quick) we entered the hall and took it all in.  Again, there was an adjustment period for Che, as the layout was different than in years past.  We also had our Friend A.J. from PopCult Pins with us for the weekend.  A.J. attended panels almost exclusively all weekend.

Che and I mingled with Artists, spent time at the Kerbal Space Academy Booth – Where Dasveldez, and his Crew spent the weekend teaching the young and old how to launch, fly, and land – just some of the possible units you can make in Kerbal Space Program – I had the opportunity to speak with DasValdez on Sunday morning.  Their booth was busy all weekend.  I love this game, and their masterful expertise make it look so easy to play.

My Mom came and checked out the Convention as well.  My entire Family really gets into this event, and its really cool seeing her there.  She hates crowds, but she seems just at home at this event.  I’m Officially starting the hashtag, #BringMomsToCon – Lets see if this takes off!

Sunday –

Sunday start much earlier than the first two days did.  I got to the show before the door were opened and was able to get an interview in with DasVeldez as the show was starting.  Che and I were also able to meet up with our Friend Smurf, from 5280Geek and got to #MadePod with him on his Podcast.  Its always nice to Podcast with local people.  I do so much over Skype, its always nice to change that dynamic.

Again, Sunday was incredibly busy.  Planned interviews were cancelled because of how busy eveyone was.  I will not take away from someone that could be making money.  I did get to chat with some of my Favorite people in my Convention Family.  Robin and Cory Childs just released their newest project Wavemen – Which was debuting at Denver Comic Con.  The book is awesome, the artwork in it, combine with the story make it a page turner! The little i skimmed over while speaking to them drew me in.  Nicki Rapp, Voice Actress for Psychonauts and The Walking Dead Video Game was also in attendance.  She couldn’t really speak too much about the Psyconauts sequel, but that she’s excited to be part of it, and can’t wait to show more of it off and speak about it more! Dan Connor was showing off some of his new work and properties he is working on.  Cap For Kids booth was crowded all weekend – Speakng of kids – The Kids Section of the Convention was full of activities for them to soak up.  From making your own Captain America Shield to learning how to draw from Artists, there was plenty to keep the kids active and entertained.

This convention grows each year, and this year was no exception.  Initial numbers so far are in the 115.000 people range.  That’s roughly 100,000 more than the first year the show was a show.  Each year, more and more people become aware that Denver in on the map on Geekdom and we’re here to stay!  I’ve already sent out the call to other POI Members to join me in next year’s adventures as we’ll always support DCC and Pop-Culture Classroom and all who put together and work at this amazingly run Convention.

As far plans for next year?  I really hope to be part of, or put on a Panel at my Home Show.  I’d love to Moderate a Panel one day as well.  I do them at other Shows in town, and out of town – It’d be a proud moment to Moderate at DCC.  We shall see as the next year rolls by what surprises the folks at DCC have in store for us, and what exciting news that will start bubbling up in the next few months.
